This channel is dedicated to Continuing Education in Psychotherapy, and to the CEP project, funded by the Leonardo da Vinci fund of the EU, which has partners at the University of Sheffield (UK), Dilemma Consultancy in Human Relations ltd (UK), the University of Bordeaux (France) and the University of Leuven (Belgium)
We (the CEP partners) can use this facility to communicate with each other but also to try out blogs, wikis, and the glossary--and even quizzes, surveys, and lessons
Indications that a person has an ASC, and when an ASC becomes an ASD; what is the fundamental handicap; what are some of the associated problems; diagnosis and who should make it
Asperger syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder, and cannot be cured by counselling or psychotherapy. But its impact on a person's life, and on the lives of those around him or her, is profoundly affected by values, emotional disposition, and beliefs. These are influenced by how a person has dealt with their Asperger syndrome, and its consequences, and by other people's reactions, which may range from understanding through to marginalization and blaming.
In this unit you will be shown how to recognize Asperger syndrome; given the evidence that counselling can be effective in dealing with emotional distress and disorder in people with Asperger syndrome; shown how counselling approaches have to be modified to be effective; and given advice about pitfalls and risks.
At the end of the unit, trained counsellors will have enough information to be able to start working successfully with people with Asperger syndrome, although we advise that this work should also be supervised by a counsellor or psychotherapist with established experience in doing so
