Aims
This unit will provide students with an overview development as a process that continues throughout life, and has physical, social and psychological themes which are intertwined and which affect one another. The failure to develop will be investigated along with theories of bodily, social, cognitive and emotional development. Development stage theories will be evaluated in the context of the purpose of development. By the end of the unit, students will be able to draw on the different developmental theories to explain the progress of development. Learning is flexible and dynamic, taking place via webpages, discussion forums and chatroom tutorials.
Learning outcomes
- knowledge of different developmental theories to explain the progress of development and developmental delay in the context of the stages of psychological development across the whole life span
- ability to evaluate models of development and the most appropriate model in relation to examples of developmental delay
- ability to synthesize strategies for therapeutically intervening in situations where there is developmental delay
- ability to justify evaluations and choice of model to peers
- update of contemporary psychotherapy/counselling literature and developments in the field
- ability to use written expression in conjunction with appropriate academic sources and conventions to present logical analysis and argument in relation to the unit
- skills in use of collaborative eLearning methods and online resources
