Two five weeks, one dealing with ethics and the other with cultural considerations in therapy and counselling

 

Course material overview

There are five weeks, covering different aspects of ethics. We think of them as different places on "Ethics and Culture Island". They are:

  • Week 1 - Introduction to Morality and Ethics: Virtue Vista
  • Week 2 - Consent: Consent Cliff
  • Week 3 - Confidentiality: Confidentiality Cavern
  • Week 4 - Non-exploitation: Protection Fort
  • Week 5 - Ethical Codes: Ethical Dock

Aims

This 5 week, distance learning unit provides students with an overview of the ethical issues arising from therapeutic contact with others. The principles that underpin the ethics of health care are considered: beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy, and justice. By the end of the unit, students will be able to demonstrate an integrated perspective on issues of practice such as consent, confidentiality, discrimination, exploitation, fairness and duty of care. Learning is flexible and dynamic, taking place via webpages, discussion forums and chatroom tutorials.

Learning outcomes

  1. knowledge of commonly accepted ethical values in caring professions
  2. ability to weight these values when they are in conflict
  3. ability to apply values to actual ethical challenges
  4. ability to evaluate the ethical basis of decisions
  5. ability to justify ethical values and practice to peers
  6. update of contemporary psychotherapy/counselling literature and developments in the field

  • Week 3- Culture and Universality: Heritage Monument
  • Week 4- Guidelines for culturally relevant psychotherapy: Competence Library
  • Week 5- Culture: Practise Well
